A little bit of geek love
For the past few days, I've noticed that my Linux setup has been a wee bit sluggish - usually the result of too much stuff for the system to handle. So I was planning to do a fresh install of my Linux Mint. Backed up all my stuff, then checked the Mint page to see if anything new had come up - lo and behold, there as a shiny new thing called Linux Mint Debian!
See, the regular Linux Mint is built on Ubuntu, with a few extras so that it pretty much "just runs". This new LM edition is built on Debian, which is pretty much the mother of all the better-known Linux distros. But Debian is not really for the faint of heart (although I did cut my Linux teeth on the Debian command line); so to see Debian married up with Linux Mint was really giving me the best of all worlds, a tried-and-tested development base and the benefits of easy-to-understand Linux Mint. Though I must confess I prefer using apt-get from the command line to update instead of the built-in updater...
So, downloaded the ISO and ran it as a live DVD for a few hours before wiping my drive clean, rebuilding the partitions, and installing the new edition. I am more than pleased with the results! The laptop is running more smoothly, with better response time - though I am quite sure this is due to the system still being in a bare-bones state. Added Opera - and what a joy that was, to be able to have all my configurations back in just a matter of mouse clicks.
Have resolved not to touch anything like the fonts and things until I absolutely need to; the default rendering seem just fine.
In other news, the USB cable of Ma's Walkman MP3 seems to be funky. It isn't doing its job of letting the computer recognize the MP3, nor is there a charge function active. *sadface* A visit to the service center appears to be in the immediate future, if troubleshooting methods do not work.
In still other news, I am in the end stages of eradicating the skin irritation that is a remembrance of the heatwave that comprised the summer months. After nearly four weeks of physical and mental irritation, my skin is calming down and appears to be returning to a semblance of normal. I don't think it will ever come back to its former milky-white glory (ehem), but I will take what I can get, and be grateful that the affected skin is in a place that only a) my husband and b) my doctor/s will ever see. Still, much of the Le Sigh at the thought of what was.
In better news, I bought a Globe SIM for my LG Cookie - am going to attempt uploading pictures on the fly with it. This leads to me wondering if I should keep posting to my photo blog, or post to a sharing site like Photobucket or SmugMug (recced by Robert Scoble), or both? I have lots of pictures wanting to be shared, and some wanting to be made into bases for art, and stuff. Which now reminds me that I still have a moribund DeviantArt account, speaking of art (or in my case, trying to be art). Meh. How sad is it that I want to take a sabbatical from my happy home in order to have time to digitize my creative life? *flail*
Time to catch up with LiveJournal now. Corollary to that, time to heat up the alfredo pasta (used conch shells instead of usual spaghetti/fettucine, with bacon bits, corned tuna, and packaged alfredo sauce) for afternoon tea. Yum - I hope.
