Letting another cat go
Our oldest cat, Sakki, 18 years old, decided to stop eating about two
days ago. *sniffle* We've tempted him with his favorite foods, but
he just sniffs delicately at them and turns away. Ramon was thinking
maybe the extreme heat has contributed to Sakki's fading away, hoping
maybe we can give him vitamins to perk him up...but 18 years is a very
long time for a cat, and I think it may be too late for our sweetie.
(But we will try, anyway.) Plus, he has other health issues due to his
age. As it is, he's lived at least two or three years longer than the
vet predicted. Surely it would be selfish to ask for more time, frail
as he is.
I can understand Ramon not wanting to let go of Sakki just yet. It's
too soon after losing Pie-cat, and Sakki is the cat of our marriage,
born in our first year of married life. He's been with us through
everything, literally. Even when all his brothers and sisters
disappeared or were lost through misadventure, Sakki was the one who
stayed close to home, who always came back. Perhaps not this time.
But I can't yet bring myself to take him to the vet to be put to
sleep. *cries* Sakki isn't in any pain, he seems quite content to
lie in his favorite spots in the lanai and the garage...and I can't.
Ramon and I cried over him tonight, while he was settled comfortably
in his spot by the garden faucet, and he just purred at us...oh, I
can't bring him to the vet! I'm almost sure she'll say there's
nothing to be done except put him to sleep. I already told Sakki it
was all right, that if he wanted to go, we'd be all right somehow,
that he didn't have to stay if it was too hard...*sniff*...right now
he's settled in his other favorite spot under the hibiscus plant on
the curb.
If it's time, I hope he goes in his sleep, knowing we love him and
will miss him terribly, and cry for a little while. Our sweet
Sakki-cat, affectionate and loyal and a beloved part of the family.
Ma will be devastated - again. *sigh*
*sniffle* There's other, better news, but I'll save it for another
post. Later, when I go and check on Mocha-cat, I'll look over Sakki
and hope for the best.
