Life without Internet
Of course, after two hours on the genset, the power came back on -
and then the cable utilities promptly went out! Woe! Boredom! Wailing
and lamentation!
Errrr...actually not.
What happened was, I was able to watch, using my laptop, the latest
episode of Spartacus: Blood and Sand (which I may have
mentioned in my previous entry), and also the first episode of Dr.
Who, featuring the latest incarnation of a long and distinguished
line of Doctors.
Now, please let it be stated for public consumption that the last time
I followed Dr. Who, Jon Pertwee was playing the role. At which point
in time I was not much older than Amanda Pond when we are introduced
to her. From that time until the present, I saw *nothing* of the
Doctors who followed - not even David Tennant's interpretation *cue
gasps of shock and fans taking to their fainting couches*; I just kept
track via the squee, sturm und drang populating my social networks.
So I figured, as long as I am now, effectively, a DW virgin again,
might as well try watching this new Doctor. Got my hands on a copy of
the episode through the usual channels. Waited for a guaranteed
uninterrupted time to watch the episode, and in the meantime turned
into a spoiler hussy reading all the commentary from people who had
already seen the episode.
Again, for the record - I think I could fall in love with this season
in a very big way. I like the interaction between the Doctor and Amy
- it smacks of high adventure and challenge and good old-fashioned
fun. Think Nick and Nora Charles, or Perry Mason and Della Street (as
portrayed in the books), along those lines. I am certain that at some
point in this series, my heart will be shattered in a million pieces,
it looks that good so far. My only prayer is that, should romance rear
its head over these two, let it be written in a style that does no
violence to the characters.
I feel a bit sorry for Rory, but I think he could bloom quite well, if
the writers make it so (please let them make it so).
Two things of note. First, I certainly will agree with anyone who
says that the real OTP in the entire Dr. Who saga has to be
Doctor/TARDIS. Seriously, the look on his face when he addresses her
as "You sexy thing" - I swear I could almost hear the song in the
background. *dies* Second, if I were looking at what Amy was looking
at in the hospital...I sure as heck would not be turning my back on
that either. *ebil grin* Oh, the look on her face! Love and hearts
and sparkly stuff.
Ahh, it feels good to get that off my chest. *grin*
Also, I completed an entire chapter for my Shadow Skill fic. It
really pays to keep your old fic fragments to hand...managed to pop in
an entire section with minimal editing, which pleased me immensely.
It's in hibernation, to see if I can't make it sound better before
posting it in the usual locations, whenever the internet gets back on.
ETA: Just checked, and as you can see, I have my cable utilities back. Woot!
