Yes, Artists *Do* Rock, TYVM

Artists Rock, by Connie

This really resonates with me. You see, if there is anything that fuels my
life, it would have to be writing - creative writing - telling stories about
people, places and things, be they real or imagined. I developed the classic
writer's callous at the tender age of eight or so, writing journal entries.
But instead of writing "Dear Diary", the entries would be addressed to
whoever I wanted to tell the story of my day.

Then came time for college, and all the well-meant advice to choose a major
that was "in demand", that would lead to a well-paying job. So I took up
Economics instead of following my gut instinct to try out for Mass
Communications.

Life is funny, though. The Econ graduate that I became, never found a job in
the banking and finance world. Instead, my career went from sales (so not
me) to broadcast media to corporate communications. I did get the
high-paying job - and the primary focus of said job was to write and write
and write. (Also, it involved office politics, an art I never mastered until
the day I stopped working.)

Lately, I've been running across "food for thought" questions that run along
the lines of "What one gift do you have? Focus on that, and delegate
everything else." Um. Easier said than done. But I think I've always known
that my one gift is writing. Oh, I have other *talents*, but the *gift* is
the writing. I cannot imagine a time when I wasn't putting pen to paper -
or in these modern times, fingers to keyboard - and letting ideas flow. No
matter what else catches my fancy, it always comes back to the writing, and
sometimes it makes me a little regretful that I didn't take better care of
such a gift. *sigh*

*perk* But on the other hand, I do have evidence that the gift is quite
forgiving; when I need it, the words flow and the prose suits the occasion.
Purple-hued for my fanfiction (which apparently, is the way to encourage my
muses to play), and rather more conservative for writing assignments. So
far, those I have written for have not returned with complaints, which is a
pleasing thing. :)

After going through various levels of stress in recent months, it would seem
that my muses consider me rested well enough to come out and play with me.
As you may have noticed, I'm pulling together the means for writing fanfic,
something I haven't done in two years. As the CNN tagline goes, I'm going
to see where the stories take me next - and I'm looking forward to the
journey!
