Hello, darkness, my old friend...
It's quiet. Just me and the house and everyone sleeping the sleep of the righteous except me, which is just about the way I like it.
I've just finished watching "24", and I think I'm hooked. If I catch it again next week, then I know for sure that I'm hooked. ::grin:: In any case, I've spoiled myself silly reading the Wikipedia entry for this season, so at least I can figure out who is who and what as things go.
Am thinking of getting myself a skin for this laptop, and a screen protector. The original plastic sheets that came with the unit are held down by tape, and while utilitarian, it hardly looks tidy, the way I like my stuff too look. The techno stuff, anyway. I should get a screen protector for the iBook as well, poor thing; nearly five years and only now I think of getting it some proper protection. Oye.
Nice normal day today, as far as the household routine goes. Punctuated by a lot of rain, which added to the atmosphere of calm and relaxation. This suited me just fine, as the second day of my cycle is usually the one that gives "going with the flow" a whole new dimension. TMI: I experimented with using tampons today, and I like how I don't need to worry about leaks and stuff when I use them. Changed them out every three hours, as recommended, and I'm definitely going to use them when I need to be out somewhere on a heavy day. For nights, however, I'm going back to using napkins, and if I stain, I stain. Don't feel right about sleeping with something in my lady bits, is all.
Why yes, I *do* have the power to squick the daylights out of people. ::ebil grin:: Did you ever doubt it?

It's 9/11 in the States, almost lunch time in New York. I was mulling over the events of that tragic day, and remembering where I was - with the parents in Seoul, halfway through a summer vacation. We'd arrived from Japan two days before, and had spent a day in Jeju. That morning, we were to explore Seoul and do shopping.
I remember listening to CNN while I towel-dried my hair - only to stop in surprise at the sight of Tower 1 with smoke pouring out of it. I called Ma's attention, dried my hair some more, and then looked up just as the second plane hit Tower 2. I squeaked and called Dad to get out of the bathroom and see the TV - all the while realizing that North Korea was just behind the beautiful view of the mountains outside the hotel window, and what if they were the ones behind this? Watching the crawl from the US military base exhorting all personnel to report/check-in and cancelling classes for the day, only served to reinforce the feeling of foreboding.
If the city guide hadn't called us from the hotel lobby, we would have stayed frozen in front of the TV all day. But life had to go on, even with the world-changing events unfolding a world away. We had a little tour of the side of the city we didn't see on our first day in Seoul. We did some shopping for ginseng, and then had ginseng chicken for lunch. The TVs in the restaurant were running continuous video feed from New York, and all the patrons were mesmerized.
I remember the gasps as we saw the towers fall - was it a replay? I don't remember...I do remember Ramon's worried voice over the phone when I called to check on him. He would much preferred us to come home that minute, but we still had a few days in Taiwan left on the vacation itinerary. (Note: these were the "dark ages" before I had a cellphone capable of global roaming, hence the need to use hotel landlines.) I was enjoined to call in as often as possible, and definitely if world events made it necessary to come home at full speed.
That vacation was also memorable for Typhoon Nara sweeping through Taipei while we were touring around Taiwan - we were in Kaoshiung, and flew back to Taipei in wretched turbulence. During said turbulence, Ma decided she wanted to go to the bathroom, just as the "fasten seat belt" sign came on, and let me tell you, that one thing gave me more palpitations than 9/11, no lie. The plane was one of those commuter jets, and it *rolled*! I was positively green with nerves when we landed.
Then we found out our hotel basement had been rained out, and we were being evicted. I got the desk clerk to call various hotels (which turned out to be of better quality, thus convincing me that cheap tours are not always the best way to go), found one that would take us in if we could get there in 30 minutes, caught a cab - and made it under the deadline, go me! My international credit card was a blessing that day, yes, indeed.
Ma celebrated by buying me a set of star rubies set in yellow gold. Woot! ::grin:: In the end, we got home safe and sound, with parents rejuvenated and me worn to a shred, as I usually am by arrival and departure routines. Ramon welcomed us home with great relief, as did the family pets.

The knitting went well today. I have made significant progress with the scarf! This business of knitting with multiple crochet threads makes for pretty coloration, and I think the scarf will look very pretty once it's done.

I also bought one of those kumihimo disks, otherwise known as friendship bracelet looms. (But not from the company in the link, that's just for illustrative purposes. Mine is a local kit.) It's a sad day when you buy a kit and find that the illustrative photographs require a magnifying glass to see properly. The written directions are clear and concise, but clear and concise photos would have been good, too!
But Google is everyone's friend, as is YouTube. Found tutorials and links, and am halfway through my first bracelet/cellphone strap/bookmark. It's the perfect portable project - it's just the disk and the threads to worry about, and there you go.
Now I know what to do with some of those DMC threads, while my cross-stitch projects are in hibernation...::glee::

I guess I'll end here for now. I need to stand up and stretch. My Twitter alerts are set at 15-minute intervals, which is also the signal for me to stand up and stretch and close my eyes for five seconds. I've let two such intervals go by, and since my brain doesn't seem to have anything more to dump, best to stop writing for a bit. Catch you all when I catch you, then!
