While the house lies quiet and still...
A short update on the day's events - aside from the news du jour, that Glorietta explosion.
Early start for Ramon's cardio appointment, since it's gruesome trying to get a parking slot at Makati Med past eight in the morning. We arrived just after eight, and found ourselves a nice shady spot not far from the back door. Breakfast at Jollibee, with the usual free newspaper. Road-tested my new DV-cam, and the results are pretty nifty!
Ramon, as I think I mentioned earlier, got a clean bill of health from Dr. Gatmaitan. Yay! We had these leftover medicines from Ramon's previous confinements, and so Ramon's medication schedule has been tweaked a bit to allow us to use these leftovers before refilling the old prescriptions. So that's a little savings right there. Our next appointment is on December 10th, which means we save another little bundle (Php2000/USD40, approx.) there as well.
Got home, ate lunch (mmm, grilled rib-eye steak, yum) and then drove the parents to the opthalmologist to get Ma's eye checked after three days of medication. Dr. Batungbacal is pleased with the results, and has also adjusted the medication schedule for the eye as a result. All will be well! (Must also remember to tell her she has to take vitamin A for her eye also.)
It was while we were there that we received news about the explosion at Glorietta, via an urgent call over my mobile phone from Ryrie-chan. She managed to catch the news on the radio (which is the worst way to catch the news, IMHO, if only because of the delivery of the newscasters) and was freaking out wondering where her sister and I were running about. Seeing as Glorietta is practically our second home, justifiable under the circumstances.
Even though the clinic was just a hop away from Makati Med, I avoided taking the route that passes in front of the ER - hello, be a good citizen and not block access, what? - and instead took one of our normal routes home that passes quite close to the scene of the incident. Had the traffic been more cooperative, I could have taken better pictures; however, chauffeur to elderly parents (one of whom is easily unnerved) trumps any desire to be a CNN i-Reporter.
Got home, saw the footage of the incident, saw the local version of the i-Reports, and together with hubby, took stock of the establishments we were certain had sustained damage. It's a pretty long list, if I think about it. It includes Luk Yuen (whose storeroom may be ground zero), Starbucks, David's Salon, Kamiseta are the ones we know for sure. Possibly Bench Fix and Toby's on the upper floor. The tiangge in the TimeZone area, definitely, had its windows blown out onto vehicles parked below (pity the owners). The blast wave carried past Goldcrest all the way to Gerry's Grill, say the reports. Gah.
Watch everyone get nervous to the umpteenth degree - and the merchants must be pulling their hair out. It's almost Halloween, and the start of the Christmas shopping season. Here's hoping people feel safe enough to go out and have fun, or profits are going to go down the tubes, for sure.
Me, I'm going to take the British attitude towards the whole thing. Life as usual, with extra vigilance. Travel with the bare necessities of life - wallet and mobile phone, to make security checks that much easier. Stay away from the mall during the peak hours as much as possible. No doubt will stay close to home for a while - not that I mind, I've been up and about so much that a little down time would be a wonderful thing, really.
I added some extensions to Firefox, and one to Thunderbird to let it handle RSS/Atom feeds. Will do random surfing then shower up before bed. Ciao!
