Recap - July 24, 2007

Since I wasn't due to pick up the laundry until after lunch, the morning was spent in trying to make sense out of the piling clutter in the bedroom and the office.  Am not sure that I made much headway, but am convincing myself that the current systems have to be modified into something more in tune with the times.

Still couldn't get the Acer to run, and a visit to the service center is looming large on the list of things to do.  ::pouts::  Got out of the house after having lunch, in order to pick up the laundry from Fabricare.  Had a call from Metro Gaisano that my loyalty card was ready for pickup, so that was the next stop on the itinerary.

Between Microsoft and other issues, my head has a tendency to ache in the early afternoon.  Ramon and I stopped at Chow King to get ourselves a snack, which was both hot and filling.  Nothing like a good bowl of noodle and wonton soup to set one on an even keel. ::nods::

Then we started our search for a USB floppy drive, which came to a successful end at the Octagon store.  Many thanks to the man at the PC Corner who pointed us in that direction!  Though the time we spent peeking into Villman, Brochiere, and other shops was not entirely wasted - it just confirmed my belief that CD-R King will always be one of my favorite places to shop for techno toys.

So.  With the new peripheral safely in hand, it was off to Starbucks for a coffee and a slice of sans rival cake to celebrate the successful find.  Then to National Bookstore for diskettes, since I wasn't sure if I still had any at home!  ::facepalm::

Tired but hopeful, we reached home, had dinner, and then came the process of downloading drivers and things that made me remember why I love my iBook So. Very. Much.  Not to bash Microsoft, because when Windows is up and running well, you hardly know that it's there, because everything just works, the way things are supposed to.  BUT.  When Windows throws a hissy fit, oy!  The white hairs - the *dead* hairs that will sprout on your head when you try to tweak things right.

In any case, it was so nice to see that PCLinuxOS ran like clockwork on the Acer when I put in the liveCD as a diagnostic.  Pretty stuff!  Despite the presence of the floppy drive, it turned out that said drive was one that Windows would only talk to up to a certain point.  Beyond that - the most important part of the installation, too! - it refused to budge.  So it's definite - on Friday, Ramon and I are going to the service center to have the techno-people install XP for us.  No sense in wasting any more time on something that can't be handled at the home service level, I say.

Off to a good night's sleep.  The parents are off to the savings and loan to collect dividends.  Thankfully, mine is directly deposited into my bank account, so that shortens our time waiting for checks to be released.
