Oh, augh.
Here I've been, happily collecting episodes of Death Note, and the fansub groups get a cease-n-desist from Viz.
Two damn episodes before the series ends.
::flails::
Why couldn't they have waited a little a longer before throwing the monkey wrench into the works? Two widdle episodes!
So now I'll have three raws to round out the collection, because heck if I'm going to sit there and not know how things end, even if I don't understand a word!

YOU ARE SO KIDDING. REALLY?!?!
AHDGSHFGSHKJFGKSHJFGHFK.
I mean, I know what happens because I've read the manga, but-- WHAT. WHAT.
Somebody's head needs to ROLL over this. ASHADGHJAFGJKH!!!!
(from what I heard-- the English dubs from Viz SUCK. And I enjoy the fansubs because they're so thorough and.... AGHHH.)
--wait, does this mean they've taken the torrents down for those they've already translated? Cos I'm only up to episode 29! WTF!!!

Wait...doesn't VIZ offer English subtitled anime? They only do English dubs? OY! That's cruel.

Wait-- doesn't distributed tracking mean that the torrents will never go down as long as somebody out there is still seeding them? Even if the sites take down the trackers? *looks hopeful* I mean, I've only got till episode 29!! ASFJSKFHSKJSHGJDAGAAAHAHAHAHRGH!!!!
I *think* they are releasing dubs with a Japanese audio track that comes with English subs. I HOPE. I don't want to hear the dubs, anime dubs suck major big time! American voice acting <<<< Japanese voice acting.
But I really liked the fansubs. They had profanity in them (or at least, the Animanda ones did). They are awesome! I'm not so sure of VIZ's quality of translation, especially since I've seen the English translations of their manga and parts of it make me want to poke my eyes out :(
On the other hand, OMFG YAY! I found another DN fan on my flist! Eeee! Comforting group hug?
(The question is-- have you read the manga? If not, OMG. YOU DON'T KNOW HOW IT ENDS. oO;)

Anyway, I didn't like the Tokyopop translations. I don't know Japanese either, not yet anyway; I read the manga in Mandarin Chinese, which translation I liked. Although... my Mandarin isn't that good so maybe I can't tell. But definitely the quality of the Animanda fansub >>> the quality of the Tokyopop translations. Which my sis paid an insane amount of money for (seventeen dollars each! In comparison, each volume of the manga in Chinese costs five dollars).

The thing I have with translating into Chinese vs translating into English is that the former isn't quite verbose as English. While English might have several synonyms for the word "run", Chinese will just have one or two characters to represent it (and Thank God Chinese tense is easy... just add "Le" at the end of the sentence to represent the past tense and "ma" or "na" for questions).
Price of manga should also vary depending where you are. If you're in Asia, US manga can be expensive. If you're in Asia, HK or Taiwan manga is cheaper because they're closer. There's also the interesting fact at how manga vendors in HK were really pirating the manga from Japan, and then later on moved to legitimize their business (paying for the rights) although I suspect some Chinese manga aren't legitimate (as specific titles can be carried by several publishers using different translations--usually evident in the title... I've seen two different Chinese characters for Gundam for example).

I think the good thing about reading manga in Chinese is that the two languages are a lot more similar than Western languages will be, so the context is somewhat preserved-- somewhat. Now, if you want to talk about the bad thing, esp. with Death Note in particular, is that since Japanese names are written with Chinese characters the translators lazily left the names in kanji without transliterating them, so I could never figure out what the names of the characters actually sounded like until much later!
The translations I read are the Singaporean Chinese translations-- I can't read the Taiwanese ones because they use the traditional set of characters, which I was never taught. I'm quite sure these are legal, but yeah, in between the smaller size (which I actually like, it makes the books handy) and the local distribution, it's logically cheaper than the US versions.
(I'm new to this whole anime/manga thing, so my ignorance is showing through the cracks. Hyuk.)

When translating names Japanese ---> Chinese, it's usually one of two ways: one is to translate by meaning (i.e. Chinese character for Japan is the same as Japan's kanji for Japan) while the other is to translate based on pronunciation (which isn't always easy considering Chinese is composed of monosyllabic words). Philippines for example is translated as Fay Li Pin (I'm unfamiliar with Pin Yin... I know how to write it in traditional Chinese) which is an approximation of Philippines.

Truth be told, I wanted to complete the series before I started watching it...it's a habit of mine. I like to know that I have both parts of a cliffhanger in hand before I start watching. ::grin::
And no, I have not read the manga, and I am totally clueless on how it ends!

I'm pissy that there are just a few eps to go but I think someone will fansub those and be done with it.
Psssst

It took a wee bit of jumping through hoops (because apparently things work differently on a Mac), but I did get the download started on iGetter, and so will have a subtitled version to sit with the raw episode I got earlier.

I'm glad I've been downloading and watching Kuro Hana's subs while I was waiting for Animanda.
