Fwd: Monday, 01-August-2011 :: Event/s of the Day & Twitter Log
Event of the Day: Installation of CPU. Which, as usually happens
with me, took longer than I thought it would.
Woke up to what looked like the promise of clear skies, and hauled out
a basket of laundry to run through the machine. The bed linens,
basically; had them all done before lunch and on the line to dry.
After a shower and breakfast, I set about doing the prep work for
setting up the new CPU. First off, disconnecting cables and moving
things about so that the cabinet top that I use as my workspace could
*finally* get a good dusting. That was when I realized that I need a
small can of Pledge or similar for jobs like this. As it goes, the
phone now sits on top of the DVR at the end of the cabinet farthest
from me. Then the printer beside it. Then the CPU in its tower
casing. Then the monitor. The keyboard and mouse are off the cabinet
and on a tea table, because of the height factor. Connected up all
the cables, fired up the new unit, and everything worked *insert happy
bouncing here*.
So, comes the moment for installing Linux. Tried out the live CD of
Mint Debian, only to discover that it hung during the install.
Regular Mint didn't work so well either - so I had to download the
latest Ubuntu image, which took three hours (spent catching up on
Clash of Kings and dinner/family relations), and worked like a charm.
*insert satisfied sigh here*
Turns out Ubuntu has prettified their user interface by leaps and
bounds since I last used it. No more Gnome! This is nice, as Gnome,
while an excellent desktop environment, can look a wee bit fugly at
times. The Unity interface used by Ubuntu is a whole lot of eye
candy. It obviously takes a bit of getting used to, but the learning
curve isn't that painful. As a matter of fact, since I started using
Linux around 2004, the whole transition experience is way less painful
than it used to be. On the other hand, there is a lot to be said for
learning how to work with the terminal and command line; it's like
knowing you have legible penmanship even though most of your writing
now involves a keyboard.
Thanks to my notes, I had my working config pretty much all tweaked up
in good time, and I am now the happy owner of a system that suits me
down to the ground. *grin*
Tomorrow, some more tweaking. Thinking of adding a couple of packages
to the config, but one thing at a time. For now, enough to know
everything works, I don't have Windows on my shiny new unit, and all
the files migrated successfully. Yayz!
06:09 First day of August. Cats had bfast, laundry is running. Will
need a shower in a little bit. #
06:11 Today is downtime day: basically, I don't have anywhere to be
but home. Where there are also things that need doing. #
06:14 Like rearranging the laundry supplies cabinet, for example. #
06:15 Random: who remembers when Twitter accounts were thought dumps
and notes to self? :) #
06:48 @fpleitgenCNN oh good grief, so good to know y'all are shaken,
stirred but otherwise OK! #!
07:15 Laundry done! Time for a quick nap before backing up files from
the laptop. #
11:31 Phew! Finished cleaning litter pans. Can sit for a little bit,
then shower up before lunch. #
14:52 Installation of Linux into new CPU now ongoing. Expecting a few
bumps along the way, but that's usual. #
14:55 Bump 1: no flashing lights to hint at progress. But every now
and then the screen scrolls like whoa. #
15:17 Oh, the suspense...i forgot how long stuff takes when it runs
from RAM. It seems long, anyway. :) #
16:47 Hm. ! Linux Mint doesn't seem to be responding. Back to Ubuntu
meantime, or attempt Debian. Good thing most of my stu...

17:41 Download of Ubuntu ISO nearly done. Meanwhile, using Windows to
catch up with LJ and Dreamwidth. #
17:50 Haay naku. Distractions galote! #
19:06 My Two Bits: Installing can be tedious bit.ly/nB6gkE #
19:26 after a fairly dry day, here comes the rain again. it's going to
be bed weather tonight. have to think about airing out the duvet soon.
#
19:26 @ericarhill more relief and less politicking would be a very
welcome thing for the American public, I'm sure. #
20:50 Looks like it's going to be Ubuntu on this box for a while, Mint
Debian not talking to my box yet. #
21:35 HA. SUCCESS! Patience rewarded, system boots. Now for the tweaking. #
22:12 This latest version of Ubuntu has a whole new desktop
experience. Will take some getting used to. #
23:26 *windy sigh* Whoo. Opera is back and configured except for
LastPass. It won't install from the extensions page. May leave it till
tom. #
23:40 ! *bounces madly* YES YES YES LAST PASS FINALLY INSTALLED, I CAN
GO SLEE P NOW. *grins like a loon* #

Ever thought of getting a mini-cpu?

Right now I'm wondering if I should upgrade the netbook's OS from WinXP to Win7. I'm of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" school, but sometimes one wonders. And XP is supposed to be around 10 years old? So I'll put that idea on the back burner a bit.

I couldnt install pirated software on win 7. There's probably a way around it but there it is.
