Changing scenery

So...as the regular readers know, Ramon and I have been searching for Mocha-cat over at Mandaluyong Circle. To get there, we've been using the new bridge beside Rockwell. It cuts the travel time from Pasay Road - or better yet, from Amorsolo, since we can use the underpass to avoid the buses at the EDSA/Ayala Avenue/McKinley Road intersection - as I say, the travel time is much shorter. Not having to negotiate Makati Avenue traffic is a wonderful, wonderful thing.

This morning as we were crossing the bridge, Ramon was remarking on how plain the bridge structure looked, considering that at the other end is supposed to rise a condominium development called the Acqua, which is supposed to be the last word in luxury living. Whatever.

Our dialogue went something along these lines:

He: This is supposed to be the access bridge to the Acqua? Hmm. Maybe they'll add something to the structure to improve its looks?

Me: So the Acqua is rising there (gesturing to empty lot across the river from Rockwell), then they'll have to figure out something to improve the view over there (gesturing to the squatter area on the other side of the bridge).

He: Expect to hear news about a sudden fire once the foundation of the Acqua get going...

That makes me sad. I've seen so many fires since I've been here in the Philippines in order to "clean out" squatters.

It's a really sick way to treat people. Sure they are not landowners and they have no legal right to be on that area but they are still people, it's disgraceful to see people treated like animals in this way. There's no heart, no compassion and nobody cares if children or elderly get caught in the fire's wake.

There's a special place in hell for the firestarters.
