It has been one HECK of a week .

1) A week ago Thursday we brought Ma to the ER to have her checked out. She was constipated the whole day, and around 6pm she was conscious but not responding, just looking disoriented.

Then she almost fell trying to go to the kitchen for dinner. Dad and I looked at each other and agreed it was time to go to the hospital.

2) While we were waiting to set her up for lab work, she gave a cry, turned red in the face, and drew up her hands.

3) I beat the world record for calling the doctor. Dad was shell-shocked, I made him sit down. I sent a message to BFF and she came racing over. Sent message to Ramon who was totally bewildered how constipation became a seizure.

4) Thank God for a BFF who seems to know half the doctors of Makati Med. (Because of medical issues, her own and family's.) She called her own neuro and we pulled the best infectious disease specialist (who happened to be in the ER) to help. Then the kidney specialist who was called in turned out to have treated BFF a few years ago. Small world.

5) Ma was diagnosed as having had a stroke. she also had a massive infection (hence the Infectious Diseases doc) and low sodium and potassium (hence the kidney doctor).

6) So they stabilized her. My goddaughter arrived with her friend who was interning at Makati Med (see, small world), who accompanied Ma to the MRI room. All three stayed with Ma while I brought Dad home and got my go bag ready.

7) Got back to the hospital. Sent everyone home. Spent the night in the ER because there was no room in the ICU. Got moved into the ICU early the next morning. Settled Ma down, got some sleep of a sort.

8) It's been a week now. Ma was awake on Saturday and has been a bad patient ever since. :) This is a very good thing. They had to put her in restraints; she pulled out her foley catheter twice, her nasogastric tube once, and displaced her ventilator tube once. Lively, no?

That last, when she displaced her vent, was an occasion for all the nurses to dash in and help out - very unnerving. They had to call down to ER to get someone to reintubate her, meantime it was manual ventilation all the way.

9) Dad and I are grateful we trusted our gut instincts. Dra. Banico said we got Ma to the hospital on time. If she had had the seizure at home...well, we're not going there.

Home news in the next edition. Gotta go, have things to do.
