Event of the Day: the SMS sent by Ramon from the 4th floor of SM Makati saying he might need the ER. Luckily for both of us, I heard the phone over the noise of the Philippine Navy band (which had mercifully taken a break that very second, from playing for people at the Concourse); luckier still I actually checked the phone instead of waiting a few minutes more...
Once I got the message, I sent back a reply telling hubby to move to the nearest door (Glorietta side, as it happened); left the full shopping cart (I was *this* close to the checkout counter, imagine my panic if I was in the middle of checking the groceries out, GAH) and made a dash to the parking lot (where the car was parked in a slot RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE DOOR). Fussed and prayed while waiting for the cars in front of me to pay their parking fees, scooped up hubby and rushed off to Makati Med.
Hubby (this is the man who would take the time to shut off the computer and fuss over what to wear to the ER while his lungs filled with fluid, I kid you not) had taken his emergency nitroglycerin pill and while in the car, melted off one whole tablet of Lasix in his mouth because we had no water for him to drink it down. His breathing as we left SM had the tell-tale rattle of pulmonary edema, but by the time we pulled up at the ER, it was clearer - and he needed the washroom. Which he used at least twice while we were waiting on the tests to be run, and once before we left the ER.
ER people made him wait while I was parking the car, his message said, so...I started to get my wits together. I mean, yeah, if the empty ER can make him wait, surely it can't be all that bad.
Got him registered, the nice man knew hubby's cousin the famous OB/GYN, founding father of Makati Med, and father of actress Menchu Genato who married a Henson (Quinito the TV announcer, was it? whatever). We chatted as the forms were typed up and printed out, and hubby was wheeled away to the Medical Unit, where we promptly became the most cheerful patients ever. I swear, every time we're in the ER, the moment Ramon is out of the crisis phase, we sound like complete frauds, we are so cheerful.
So we had a nice doctor, then we met the other doctor who had us twice in ER; an ECG was run, an x-ray was taken, and a cardiac enzymes blood test was run to rule out any chance that Ramon's heart was manufacturing stuff it shouldn't. All the tests came back clear, praise God! The doctors say by the sound of it, Ramon had a bad case of heartburn. I have a sneaking suspicion that the prompt ingestion of nitroglycerin and Lasix averted potential disaster, on top of what was probably the heartburn. See now, the man was perfectly fine till he had to go to the washroom, and after he did his business, everything went awry. Anyhow, our last ER run was also for hyperacidity, so there's precedent.
We paid, and went back to SM for a small bite to eat. Then back to the supermarket to reconstruct the shopping cart contents - thank heavens I hadn't thrown away the pieces of paper like I usually do once the items are crossed off - and get the new kitchen brooms out of the package counter.
Then Alphaland for Ramon's weekly supply of medicines.
All in all, it was a good day, even with the ER scare. We got everything done that was supposed to be done, and all is well. Needless to say, we are truly grateful (even with Ramon nearly freaking himself back into the ER when he looked at the bill).
