Well, my activities for last Saturday are pretty much summarized in the tweets below. Did a drive-by search for Mocha, with the usual lack of success. I have learned to cope with Ma's nightly recriminations, because I've observed that she can go from angry to sunshine (as if nothing ever happened) in a snap. So while her words still sting, they do not make me dissolve into a tearful wreck as formerly. Carry one's cross and all that, with many prayers that I'm not making a mountain out of a molehill.

In happier events, the Hainanese chicken rice at Kenny Rogers' wasn't bad at all. Personally, I could have used some more sesame oil in my ginger, but that's just me. Got Ma's vitamins at Healthy Options. Would have liked to linger a little longer but Ramon looked like he needed a nap, so home we went, after a quick dash into Rustan's for cat food.

Event of the Day: I think I mentioned at some point that my laptop screen started doing that thing where a tiny black spot becomes a virtual mushroom cloud of LCD liquid? Well, I took it to the laptop service stall to ask how much it would cost to replace the screen. Initial estimate was 8,000 pesos. Then the boss of the stall arrived and said, no, it wasn't 8,000 - it would be about 6,000 pesos.

*meep* So the choice was spend 6,000 - 8,000 on a 15" screen, or 4,000 on a 19" external monitor. Long story short, I am now the happy owner of a CD-R king 19" LCD monitor. It is *amazing* how different everything looks - and Ramon is happy at the thought that I won't be stressing out my eyes. (Methinks that when the time comes, I ought to get him a 22" monitor, at the rate prices are going?)

The fun part is, I have this gadget that turns the monitor into a TV tuner. Am using earphones in lieu of a proper sound system; but then again, I watch TV when the house is asleep, so maybe I don't really need the sound system just yet.

Event of the Day: the world discovers that bin Laden is dead at the hands of US Navy SEALs. Twitter erupts with people sharing official news, personal reactions, speculation and all the rest of it.

Our cook/maid announced yesterday that she would be leaving us - apparently the stress of managing a family of three teenage daughters from a distance is getting to her. Add to that, her aunt passed away last week and her mama is sick and the ex-hubby is still problematic...we agreed it would be much better for her to go home to Bulacan rather than take constant days-off for every family emergency. To say that there was general rejoicing is an understatement. I cleaned out the kitchen cabinet and sounded like a setting hen on steriods, I was clucking so much.

In the end, Dad engaged a new cook/maid, and (a) she appears to be getting along with the other maid and (b) she is a cheerful sort of worker. So far, so good.

Decided to dabble in the kitchen and came up with a decent version of chicken adobong puti. It's essentially cooking chicken (though you can use pork also) with a little pork saute cubes, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns. One can also add soy sauce, but that's not part of the original version of the dish - the ultimate Pinoy comfort food. Soy sauce helps speed up the cooking. But the best way is to toss all the ingredients in the slow cooker and let it rip for about four hours. Gorgeous stuff is what happens next. Guaranteed, no leftovers.

Event of the Day: Ma had her physical therapy session a day early, because her birthday falls on the next day. Cris brought a Goldilocks ube roll as an advanced birthday gift, the darling.

After we dropped her off at Alphaland, Ramon and I got some groceries at the SaveMore across the way, and then home to life as usual. There is a part of me desperately hoping I can reclaim the aspects of my life that seem to have been put by or snatched away by circumstance; it would be a lovely thing.
